Vernaculator Terms of Service
Draft. These terms are a starting point and must be reviewed by a lawyer before Vernaculator launches.
1. Who we are
Vernaculator is operated by Shareweaver LLC ("we", "us"). By using Vernaculator you agree to these terms.
2. What Vernaculator is
Vernaculator uses AI to rewrite text as slang and to explain slang. It is for entertainment and education. The content is irreverent and playful, and is kept PG: Vernaculator does not swear (see Content rules). Every character is fictional; any resemblance to a real person is coincidental. AI translations can be wrong, and we make no promise that a translation is accurate or appropriate for any situation.
3. Age
Buying tokens, Pro or Max is for people 18 and older; by buying you confirm you are at least 18. Posting clips to The Slam, having a nickname page and commenting are for members, and members must be 18 or older. Users under 13 may not use community features.
Teen accounts (ages 14 to 17). A parent or legal guardian who is a member can add a teen in Family and link the teen's own phone with a one-time code. By adding a teen, the parent confirms they are the teen's parent or legal guardian and consents to the teen using Vernaculator under these Terms, and is responsible for the teen's use. Teen accounts stop at heat 6, and a parent cannot change that. Like everyone, teens get the PG version: no swearing. Teens spend from the parent's token balance up to the daily allowance the parent sets, and cannot buy anything themselves. Tokens a teen spends are charged to the parent's balance and, like all token sales, are final. If the parent allows it, a teen may submit clean clips to The Slam; each clip goes to the parent first, then through our normal review. Teens cannot comment. The parent can change the allowance, turn posting off, or remove the teen at any time.
4. Your responsibility
You are responsible for what you translate, say, post and share. You may not use Vernaculator to harass, threaten, or target any person or group. You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Shareweaver LLC and its owners from any claims, damages or costs arising from your use of Vernaculator or content you create or share with it, to the extent the law allows.
5. Content rules: what translations aren't allowed
Vernaculator is PG. These are off limits at every heat level, in every character and language:
- Swearing: no English swear words, mild or strong, bleeped or not, and no foreign words that mean the same. A character from another culture may use a light everyday exclamation from their own language at high heat, never aimed at a person.
- Slurs aimed at a group: race, ethnicity, religion, nationality, sexuality, gender or disability.
- Hateful stereotypes and tropes about any group, including racist and antisemitic tropes, or jokes that put down people for who they are.
- Sexual content: sex acts, sexual innuendo or flirting.
- Real people: harassing, threatening or bullying someone, or pretending to be a real person.
- Threats and violence: threats against anyone, or encouraging violence or self-harm.
- Personal information: other people's addresses, phone numbers or private details.
- Anything illegal.
Vernaculator refuses or tones down requests like these. Don't use it, or the clips you make with it, to target anyone. Community submissions that break these rules are removed, and accounts that post them may be banned.
6. Community submissions
When you submit a correction, term, rating or character idea, you give Shareweaver LLC a worldwide, royalty-free license to use, edit and publish it in Vernaculator. We may moderate or remove any submission.
The Slam clips, comments and nicknames. Only members (see Membership) who are 18 or older can submit clips, claim a nickname or comment. Submitting a clip to the The Slam is optional and only happens when you tick the box and tap Submit. By submitting, you give Shareweaver LLC the same license, including the right to post the clip on Vernaculator's own social media pages (like TikTok, Instagram, X and YouTube) credited to your nickname, or to "a Vernaculator fan" if you left it blank. Every clip is checked before it goes up, and clips with swearing go on the 18+ page. Comments and nicknames are public; nicknames can't impersonate anyone or be offensive, and we can take one away. Want your clip down? Email [email protected] and we'll remove it from Vernaculator and stop using it in new posts.
Community characters. Members can make their own character on /create for 500 tokens ($5), with a voice designed from their description and a look built from our cartoon parts. Characters must be original: no real people or sound-alikes, no characters owned by others, nothing that mocks a group, nothing sexual. An automated check reviews every character before it is made, and you aren't charged if it is turned down. Once made, the character is available to everyone in the app under Community, credited to your nickname if you gave one. Spots are limited by how many voices our voice provider allows, first come, first served. To make room, we may retire the least-used community characters; a retired character's voice is deleted, but its existing clips stay up and its maker can keep using it in text. We may also remove a character that breaks these Terms or is reported by the community. You keep the rights you have in what you wrote; you give Shareweaver LLC a license to use, display and voice the character in Vernaculator and our shows. Like all token sales, the 500 tokens are final.
7. Purchases
Pro and Max are one-time purchases for your account. They may not be available in every country. Refunds follow the policy of the payment provider used at checkout.
Lifetime membership. Membership costs a one-time $1 (it is not a subscription) and includes 100 tokens. It lets you post clips to The Slam, have a public @nickname page and comment on clips, for as long as Vernaculator offers those features. Anyone who has bought tokens, Pro or Max is a member too. You must be 18 or older to join, and by joining you confirm that you are. Membership is tied to your restore code, is personal and can't be transferred. Like tokens, it is a final sale once its tokens are available, except where the law requires otherwise. We may suspend or end a membership, without refund, if its owner breaks these terms (for example, by posting content that breaks the content rules) or is under 18.
Tokens. Tokens are prepaid credits for the premium AI and premium voices, at the token prices shown in the app next to each action. 100 tokens cost $1 in the standard packs, and larger packs include bonus tokens. Tokens do not expire, have no cash value, cannot be transferred or sold, and are not refundable once used, except where the law requires otherwise. All token sales are final. Tokens are available as soon as you buy them, and by buying you agree to that and give up any right to cancel the purchase, where the law allows. We do not buy back tokens or pay cash for them. If a premium action fails, its tokens are returned automatically. Your tokens are tied to your restore code (it starts with "SS-"); keep it safe, because anyone with the code can use the tokens. If you lose it, email [email protected] with your PayPal receipt and we will try to help. We may change token prices for future actions, but tokens you already bought keep their value in tokens. The free version, including one premium voice per day, may change or end at any time.
