For teachers
Free vocabulary, writing and character-education activities your students will actually want to do.
Students already talk in "fr", "no cap" and "mid". Vernaculator meets them there. They type what they'd say, and funny cartoon characters show them better ways to say it, at the level that fits them. It works on a classroom projector, a Chromebook or a phone.
What it covers
- ELA supplementation: vocabulary acquisition, word choice, grammar tips and word histories (supports the Language standards on vocabulary use).
- Creative literacy: poetry forms (haiku, limerick, sonnet, free verse, spoken word) and style and voice.
- Register and code-switching: the same idea in slang, plain English and formal English.
- SEL and character education: clever comebacks instead of insults, and a weekly cartoon where every episode teaches one value. Seven hero characters (integrity, responsibility, discipline, humility, adaptability, generosity and courage) are coming soon.
Ready-to-use activities
Each one takes 5 to 30 minutes. "Share to Google Classroom" posts the activity link to your class.
5-minute bell ringer: Word of the Day
Any grade Β· 5 min
Project the Word of the Day. Students guess the meaning, hear it said aloud, then write their own sentence using it. Finish with a quick round of Guess the meaning at the level that fits your class (High school, College or PhD).
Level up a sentence
Grades 5+ Β· 15 min
Students type a sentence the way they'd text it ("i was so tired and the test was mid"). Say it fancy rewrites it at three levels and explains every new word and what it replaced. Have students compare the levels, pick their favorite new word, and use it in a paragraph of their own.
Clever comebacks (instead of insults)
Grades 4+ Β· 15 min Β· SEL
Talk about how it feels when someone says something rude. Then type a common playground jab and choose A clever comeback. The app answers with calm, well-spoken wit aimed at the remark, never at the person. Discuss: why does a smart, kind answer work better than an insult back?
Poetry workshop
Grades 3+ Β· 20 to 30 min
Students write one plain sentence about their day, then turn it into a haiku, a limerick, a rhyming poem, a sonnet or spoken-word slam using the Say it like⦠list. Read a few aloud and compare how the same idea changes with each form.
Code-switching: slang to formal
Grades 6+ Β· 15 min
Paste a slang phrase into the decoder to get plain English, then have a character say it back in their style. Discuss register: how we talk to friends, to a teacher, at a job interview. Every way of talking is valid; good communicators choose the right one for the room.
Word detectives
Grades 5+ Β· 15 min
Pick a word from the Word library and read its history: where it came from, who first used it and how its meaning changed. Students present one surprising word story to the class.
Watch and discuss: Big Sal's World
Any grade Β· 10 min
Watch a 3-minute episode together. Pause before the end and ask "What did we learn?" Let students answer first, then reveal Big Sal's answer. Every episode is built around one choice: a character does the wrong thing, then makes it right.
Classroom basics
- Free. No sign-up and no student accounts. The free Standard AI does every activity on this page.
- PG, always. No swearing, no adult content and no ads. Rated ESRB Everyone on Google Play.
- No student data. We don't ask for names or emails. Posting to our public contest page needs an adult membership, so students can't post publicly.
- Limits. Each device gets up to 100 free text results a day, plenty for a lesson. Character voices are the one paid extra: one free voice play per device a day, then tokens.
